Confessions of a balloon-aholic

Yes. I must confess. I am a balloon-aholic. I don’t know when it happened. I didn’t knew a thing about them a month before. But somehow it happened. I fell in love with this more than 300kg machinery that defies the laws of gravity and in a few minutes it becomes lighter than air. Whenever I see a balloon, of any sort, it reminds me of Hot Air Balloons. This inventions that was created long after the first human flight and even the first plane was invented, which would be around 40 years ago. I like to think that in that time some smart people decided to create something so amazing that can give you this feeling of freedom.
Maybe I am a dreamer, but when I am imagining the balloon flight I find it very poetical. When you know that you can only operate it yourself, as a pilot, you can’t have any auto pilot, it’s all in your hands, as your life is. When you need to know so much science: you need to know metheorology you need to know to read a map, you need machanics and so on, and still: you cannot control everything. Eventhough you need to be in control at all times, you need to and you are letting yourself carried by the wind. Just like the dance of an autumn leaf. Slowly, calmly, letting yourself being put again on the ground.
However, when you add “competition” next to this, the poetry somehow fades away. Now it’s all about having control at all times. You should control everything, even the winds, if you are a master of it.
Before coming here, I didn’t know that that pilots have some tasks. Actually there are quite a lot of them. And all of them test how much the pilot is in control of his balloon and everything that is connected to it. Some of the challenges are pretty basic: you have to drop a marker(a small sand bag which is a representation of a balloon) to a specific place. But, here I found out that there is more to that and to control: if the wind is blowing right, you should be in control to go left, if the wind is fast you should go slow, and so on. Definitely, you should always be in control.
So, in the end, I guess that piloting a balloon is pretty much like handling your own life. You can be in control and in the same time be carried to wherever the wind is blowing, or you can be in control and fight against all odds in order to win. I definitely think that each one of them is a good choice. The only thing that maybe differs is that in life, sometimes there is no competition director to give the challenges. You have to set them yourself.

Flying in a hot air ballon is unique, yet feels so right!

Flying in a hot air ballon is unique, but feels so right, maybe we where all some kind of flyers in our past lifes.
This technique of flying could not be better. This is no machineary like an airplane or a helicopter, it isn’t driven by any electric power wich means you won’t hear any annoying sound coming from the air ballon when flying, what actually happens when airborne is that totall silence takes over, wich makes this flight so beutifull and special.
You are in a dream, not a lucid dream, but a real dream, you are in a totall elysium.
I like that the ballon doesn’t travel fast at all, It’s so comfortable just being at one place somewhere in the sky going as slow as possible, seeing everything down on earth move past you super slowly, wich kind of feels like a good meditation.
And what i also like so much about a hot air ballon is that it is kind of like a tent or a puzzle, you have to put the tent together in order to sleep in it, in this case you have to put the airballon together in order to fly in it, you are basically flying in your own puzzle.
This was the first time i flew in a hot airballon yesterday, this was one of the best experiences i have ever had, and i will never forget this.
Don’t waste your money on a trip to the north pole or safari trips, go fly in a hot airballon !
My name is Gísli Airballon-master Pétursson.

FIRST FLIGHT IS LIKE FIRST LOVE…

maneeeeeeeee

The first flight is so expected and unexpected in the same time… like first love.

You are preparing anything for meeting it and waiting for it for a long time, but anyway it comes suddenly and changes everything in your mind… like first love..

You are already in the basket and air balloon is going to rise from the land, you think you can guess when exactly it’ll be launched, but it launches so soft and gentle that you don’t feel that you are already between earth and sky… like first love.

During the first flight you don’t feel the speed of the hot-air balloon, how far you are from the earth, it’s doesn’t matter, you are already in the balloon far from everything earthly… like first love..

You never know where and when you will land, everything is decided by the wind, by nature… like first love.

The most dangerous part is touching the ground and the most harmful when you realize your time is over… like first love.

There are no two similar flights. Every flight is unique… like first love.

Welcome to Valmiera Cup 2013!

A smart man once said that combining work with pleasure it’s the best way of being really useful and happy! That’s what we, balloonteers, tried to do yesterday, to work and enjoy what we did to the fullest! It was a long, big and most importantly interesting day because of the opening of our event-Hot Air Balloon Festival !

We had to do everything possible in order for the pilots to have a nice and welcoming start of the championship! At 9 o’ clock we were all ready in our new white T-shirts, enthusiastic and excited to do a surprise video for the guests that were to come to the competition. As you can see in the video below there were lots of smiles, and good, positive energy, which I know is contagious.

In the beginning, some members of the teams were frowning and worried, I guess. They didn’t smile back to us, maybe because of the stereotype that Latvian people are shy till they get used to you. Anyway they got used very quickly because it’s impossible not to like such hard-working and active people like we are! They even let half of us to accompany them in the first flight with a real, real flying balloon!!!!

Isn’t that a real adventure?!

Are you challenging yourself enough?!

“Are you challenging yourself enough?” This is the “star” question in this EVS project.

Somebody close to me once told me that if you really want to do something, then,

1098141_3311629765167_1501381925_nyou should be a little bit scared about that something. If you feel this mixture of excitement and fear, than you are on the right path . And I feel almost everyday, when I am trying to do something new. whether it is a training about hot air balloon, metheorology and how to read a map, or bike riding in the forrest in darkness. Or even learning Latvian language. And I felt that. In the process of deciding to come here, in Latvia and not apply to masters.

Life is all about taking risks. And EVS definitely will teach how to take risks so that you can learn something from it. You can learn that it’s always impossible until its done, that you can do things you’ve never imagined you will do in your life, you can learn that you are better that you thought you were.

And about Latvia… For me, Latvia is a place of calmness (eventhough, sometimes, we the Balloonteers do some crazy, funny things). Maybe it’s because of all the greenery you see around you, which feels you up in an instant with positive energy. Maybe it’s because of “latviešu valoda” which for me sounds very sweet, every time I hear it on the streets. Maybe is because of this cute, singing people, that I can feel have a lot in common with my own people, Romanians. But, most probably it’s a mixture of all this together.

And, again, it’s always about the people. And I am definitely sure my experience would be
a little dull without the lioness temper that Sari keeps well hidden in a sweet girl,
the kindess of Iana, the amazing life story of Mane, Sarah’s thirst of new,
the sweet dance moves of Andreea, the passion Luisa puts in her projects, the vivacity of
Hranfhildur, the randomness of Gisli, the funny phrases of Fran.

I am already curious what other adventures Valmiera Cup 2013 will bring!

Sending lots of balloony love,
Raluca from Romania.

Promotion Weekend for the HOT AIR BALLOON CUP

This weekend was amazing!!! We had a lot to do and a lot of fun…

On Friday we finished our leaflets, it was not so easy, because we changed the outlet many times till we found what we wanted.  (Thanks a lot Raluca, good that we have you!) We also ordered our own T-shirts with the logo from the cup, and buttons for the teams who are coming for their welcome bag.

Our first stop to give our handouts away was Valmiera’s beer factory- we prepared some balloons with a painting on it and had our soapbubbels with us. It was a long way for walking what we didn’t expect- about 5km, but on our way we met many people to invite them to the cup next weekend. In this night was a concert in the beer factory- many people, good food, Latvian music and a wonderful place to stay🙂

After the party night on Saturday we splitted our team in two: Mane, Iana, Sari and Fran were going to Cēsis and Luisa, Hildur, Andrea, Gisli and I went to Limbaži.

It was a wonderful sunny& hot day in Limbaži and we had many luck, because exactly on this weekend they had their city festival.  So we distributed our leaflets and, after our sightseeing tour we went to the lake in Limbaži. Gisli jumped right into the water when we arrived! It’s a good place to see, to swim and to relax- good that we found it!

On Sunday we went to Sigulda- again it was sunny and hot… really good weather the last days- unbelievable!!!

Soon we distributed all our handouts to the people. After this we made a tour around the city, but the time was running fast- so we decided to lay a little bit in the grass under the trees for relaxing. After our nap we went slowly back to the train station- on the way we found a Ferris wheel. It was a beautiful view from the top around Sigulda- we have to COME AGAIN!!!

Now the hot-air-balloon cup is coming soon- a few days to go…

I’m very excited!🙂🙂🙂
